Top 5 List for Spring

Spring is in the air! There's still snow on the ground, but the Spring Fashion Shows have come and gone, bikinis are being sold in Target, and it was 41 degrees today, so spring is here. I can't wait to start shopping for swim suits, sandals and dresses!!! After looking through magazines, walking around stores and browsing online, I've come up with a Top 5 list of things I'd like for Spring.

1. Flirty floral Dress (Target has some great ones)

2. Sandal (Classier than flip-flops and just as comfortable. Go to Payless, Target, G by Guess)

3. Bikini (Or tankini/one piece for more coverage. Go to Target, Victoria's Secret, Old Navy)

4. Lipstick (Berry/Pink shades are in, but I always love a red lip. Go to Ulta or Target)

5. Nail Polish (I'm absolutely in love with L'Oreal's Pro Manicure Nail Polish in Fleur de Lis, Go to Target)

All of these items don't require a lot of money and make me feel ready for spring! The number one thing you do need however, even if you don't get any of this stuff, is CONFIDENCE. Please love yourself this Spring. Self-love is always in style.

Roaring Twenties

We had skits in class today about the 1920s, and I was supposed to be the movie star Mary Pickford at a movie premiere. Obviously this outfit isn't entirely accurate, but I just wanted an excuse to dress up as a flapper. People actually liked this outfit and did not think I was a crazy costume person, so yay me!

The 1920s was a time of prosperity, dancing, drinking, lipstick and behaving badly. It was also covering up a number of problems that would surface during the Great Depression. Not too different from out situation now huh?

Victoria Beckham

I was so excited to see Victoria Beckham on the cover of Glamour for March 2010. I love her!

1. She's got amazing self-confidence and style

2. She's worked hard to get where she is and obviously adores her husband and children

3. She's funny, witty and proves that very slender girls can be just as sexy as those with huge boobs and rear ends

In case you didn't know, Victoria Beckham is an ex-Spice Girl and married to one of the sexiest men alive, Daid Beckham. While I never liked the Spice Girls (sorry Posh/Victoria), I definitely love her sense of style now. You can tell from reading her interview in Glamour that she's a lovely woman with a lot of intelligence and humor. Some people think she must be cold because she "never smiles in pictures," but so what? Heidi Klum is known for her legs, Victoria Beckham is known for her signature pout. Looking at her, and reading her book, That Extra Half Inch, gives me confidence to be myself and try new things just as she does. I love her!!!

RIP Alexander McQueen

For those of you who may not know, one of my favorite designers, Alexander McQueen, took his own life earlier this week. His mother had died a few days before hand, and apparently McQueen had felt depressed from time to time. He hung himself in his apartment in London.

I'm shocked and to some extent, angry. Not angry at McQueen exactly, I don't think he was being selfish or weak, he was obviously in a lot of emotional pain and unfortunately, saw no other solution but to kill himself. I'm angry at the fact that I will never seen another example of his brilliance, I will never be able to sit at one of his fashion show's and I will never have the chance to be his intern. I would've loved to work for that man! He was brilliant. I'm sure someone else will take over his company, but it won't be the same.

I admired McQueen for his beautiful clothes and for his risk-tasking. I felt a strong connection to him, both of us look at the world as if we are on the outside looking in. He took what was happening around him and created a fantasy that expressed so many emotions. It was more than fashion, he was telling a story.

The pictures are from his 2008 Fall Collection, which was my favorite. Even though I didn't know him personally, I will still miss him. I felt like I knew a part of him through his work. His death has affected so many and I hope his family will be alright and cope with his death.

Men's Fashion

What? The girl who swears she'll never do men's wear is blogging about menswear? Mhm. I really liked Jean Paul Gaultier's looks for Fall 2010. While the metro-male was a big trend in the last few years, the more traditional idea of masculinity made a come back, and now I think more designers are fusing the two. Today's male can be both well-groomed and masculine. Gaultier played with this idea by combining the idea of a prizefighter with sporty, yet expensive looking well made clothes. I love it. It's exciting! He's not the only one who did this, but I liked his models the best.

Plaid Shorts

I actually made these shorts last year in Clothing II, but I thought I'd write about them today, along with my outfit in general. I don't care what anyone says, I love wearing tights with shorts. It's the perfect combination and makes use of clothes all year long. I also love mixing patterns as long as both have a similar color scheme.

Sweater was a gift, shorts I made myself, tights are from Target, and the key is from an antique store. Most people avoid working with plaid because they find it too time consuming to match the plaids (you have to match the lines in the plaid along your seams so you get one continuous plaid instead of a hot a mess), but I love how it looks so I don't care. If you do want to work with plaid, pick a big balanced one that's not too crazy and don't worry about matching up the plaids in curved seams like sleeves.
